LYF: Lythrodontas Forest, Flora and Fauna (Winner of Foundation for Environmental Education's GAIA 20:30 Biodiversity Best Practice Competition.)

Our school has been under the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus since 1980. It offers important educational and social work as long as it provides free education to children aged 3-6 years in an acritic community, Lythrodontas, which is situated in a wonderful natural environment near the mountains of Macheras. It houses two public, one community and one Special Education and speech therapy clases. 75 children attend our school this year from which a significant number comes from various countries outside Cyprus such as Bulgaria, Romania, Sweden, Britain, Philippines and Sri Lanka. They are children of immigrants or workers who found work on estates, cottages or families with elder people who need special help. The connection of the Curriculum with the daily life of the community and the wonderful natural environment around us are high on our list of priorities.

The main goal of our project was to acquaint the children with the species of trees in our forest and the richness of the fauna and flora of the area. However, because the restrictions due to the corona virus did not allow us to move outside the school, we tried to bring the forest to the school in various ways. Individual goals of the program were the tree planting of the school, the creation of an herb garden, flower garden and vegetable garden as well as the joy of creative engagement with them.

The dissemination of the activities and results of the project was done in various ways: 1) written information to parents and the community 2) sending the code for the forest to all families of our school and placing it in prominent places of the community 3) Demonstration with banners and slogans for protection of the forest in our village.4) Photography competition for the promotion and protection of the natural environment of our village.
